Alberta is trying to negotaite higher immigration allotment to address workforce shortage

Premier Danielle Smith of Alberta called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, requesting that he reevaluate his government’s decision to restrict the number of allocations for the provincial nominee program in 2024.

In the recent allotment for PNP nominations Alberta only received a quota of 9,750 for 2024 which is down from the 10,140 originally allotted by the federal government. The province was anticipating a notional increase to 10,140 in 2024 and 10,849 in 2025 due to the government’s annual immigration level plan for 2024 allots 110,000 for provincial nominee programs (PNPs), a 4,500 increase from 2023. People are suspecting why there was no raise in the allotment.

To pose the query In a letter to the Prime Minister, Premier Danielle Smith requests that the number of allotments to Alberta under the Provincial Nominee Program be doubled to 20,000, with an additional 10,000 allocated for Ukraine.

“I am very concerned with this decision given the adverse impacts it would have on our province’s economy and ability to help Ukrainian evacuees find permanent jobs and futures in Alberta,”

Smith states that the growing economy of Alberta is facing labour shortages in key industries such as healthcare, construction, technology and education therefore it is pleaded to have a higher allotment for the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP).

The Ukrainian war contributed a lot to the population of Alberta and almost 93 percent of Ukrainians that have come to Alberta are expected to stay and apply for permanent residency, Smith adds in the letter. She also urges that Ottawa needs to allow Alberta to grow its economy and, by extension, boost the national economy, while at the same time doing a humanitarian service for those fleeing war.

The federal government restricts Alberta’s ability to satisfy the growing demands of the labor market by refusing to give the required increase in the province’s provincial nominee numbers.

Alberta’s request to raise the immigration quota to 20,000 is a calculated risk taken to ensure the future economy and well-being of the province. Alberta wants to meet the demands of its labour market, stimulate economic growth, and preserve its cultural heritage by luring skilled labourers, entrepreneurs, and families from around the globe. The province must not waver in its commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and fair chances for all citizens as it advances its immigration agenda. Alberta can create a more robust and resilient society that will continue to benefit from the contributions of immigrants for many years to come by working together and having a common vision.
