Canada Announces Fee Hike for Temporary Resident Visas As Of December 1

If you’re planning to visit, study, or work in Canada, there’s an important update you should know. As of December 1, 2024, the Canadian government has announced an increase in fees for several temporary resident visa (TRV) categories. Whether you’re a prospective tourist, student, or worker, this change could affect your immigration plans.

Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming fee adjustments and how to prepare.

Why the Fee Increase?

The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reviews its processing fees periodically to ensure they reflect the actual costs of delivering these services. The last adjustment occurred in 2020, and since then, there has been a rise in operational expenses. This latest update aims to address inflation and maintain the efficiency of Canada’s immigration system.

What Categories Are Affected?

The fee hike impacts the following categories of temporary resident applications:

  1. Visitor Visas:
    • Includes single-entry and multiple-entry visas for tourism, business, and family visits.
    • New fee: CAD 239.75 (up from CAD 229.00).
  2. Study Permits:
    • Applicable to international students pursuing education in Canada.
    • New fee: CAD 389.75 (up from CAD 379.00).
  3. Work Permits:
    • For foreign workers, including employer-specific and open work permits.
    • New fee: CAD 394.75(up from CAD 384).
  4. Temporary Resident Permits:
    • Issued in special cases for individuals otherwise inadmissible to Canada.
    • New fee: CAD $239.75 (up from CAD 229.77).
  5. Biometric Fees:
    • Covers fingerprinting and photo services required for most applicants.
    • New fee: CAD 95 (up from CAD 85).
Who Is Affected by the Fee Changes?

The increase applies to all applicants submitting temporary resident applications on or after December 1, 2024. If you’ve already applied or intend to do so before this date, the current fees will still apply.

How to Prepare for the Changes
  1. Apply Before December 1:
    • If you’re eligible and ready, consider submitting your application now to benefit from the current lower fees.
  2. Plan Your Budget:
    • Account for the updated fees in your financial planning, especially if you’re applying for multiple permits (e.g., a study permit and a work permit for your spouse).
  3. Stay Informed:
    • Keep track of updates from the official IRCC website and consult with an immigration expert if needed.
Why Canada Still Remains a Top Destination

Despite the fee increase, Canada continues to attract millions of immigrants and visitors every year due to its robust education system, thriving job market, and welcoming multicultural environment. These changes reflect Canada’s commitment to maintaining high-quality services for applicants while supporting the immigration system’s long-term sustainability.

The fee hike for Canada’s temporary resident categories is a reminder to act early and stay informed about policy changes. Whether you’re pursuing higher education, exploring career opportunities, or simply visiting loved ones, understanding these updates can help you make well-informed decisions.
