As of June 27, the federal government is expanding this groundbreaking program to include children under 18 and people with disabilities. This expansion marks a significant step towards comprehensive dental coverage for all Canadians.

  1. Expansion Timeline:
    • June 27: Children under 18 and people with disabilities become eligible
    • May 1: Coverage began for seniors 70 and older
    • Applications opened for those aged 65-69
  2. Program Reach:
    • 1.2 million additional Canadians will now have access
    • Over 10,500 providers have joined the program
    • More than two million seniors have been deemed eligible
  3. Coverage Details:
    • Most routine dental care is included (cleanings, X-rays, fillings, root canals, dentures)
    • Complex services like partial dentures and crowns require pre-authorization
    • Pre-authorized services will be covered starting November 2024
  4. Future Plans:
    • Canadians aged 18-64 can apply in January 2025
    • The program aims to cover one-quarter of Canadian residents without private dental plans
    • Estimated cost: $13 billion over five years
  5. Eligibility Criteria:
    • Patients must not have access to existing private dental insurance
    • Employers are required to declare if they offer private dental plans
