The year 2024 starts great as  Ontario-OINP International Student Stream undergoes through major change

Recently, the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) has significantly revised its criteria for obtaining permanent residency through international students.

The OINP International Student stream was formerly only open to individuals with a one-year certificate from an approved institution. This was only valid if entry to the program required a degree. However now that this particular prerequisite has been removed, more eligible international students have access to permanent residence through a more open path. This change increases the number of certificate programs that are now eligible for OINP.

This change, which will come into effect from 1 January 2024, is aimed at expanding eligibility criteria for international students, particularly those with a one-year university certificate. However, those who have submitted their application before 1st January 2023 will remain unaffected.

This modification has been reflected in the Expression of Interest (EOI) score system for the highest educational degree and other Canadian qualifications. As well as the list of accredited educational institutions for this stream has also been revised. The screenshot of the scoring factor is attached below

Canadian education experience

A Credential must be a post-secondary education credential from an eligible institution that takes at least one year to complete on a full-time basis.

  • More than one Canadian credential: 10 points
  • One Canadian credential: 5 points

To be able to apply for the program OINP international student stream students must check the eligibility criteria and must check one of the following point: the students can either

  • Complete an undergraduate degree or diploma in at least two years from a recognized Canadian institution
  • Finish a graduate degree or diploma in one year from a recognized Canadian institution
  • Earn a graduate certificate in one year from a recognized Ontario institution
  • Get a university graduate certificate in one year from an Ontario Institution

These changes demonstrate the OINP’s dedication to helping international students in Ontario make a more seamless transition to permanent residency and to contributing to the province’s development by attracting a diverse pool of applicants.
