work permit extensions manitoba

In a move that reflects Canada’s commitment to inclusivity and support for its temporary residents Immigration Minister Marc Miller has announced the extension of work permits for 6,700 individuals in Manitoba on Tuesday, 7th May 2024.

In February the government of Manitoba  requested an extension of the work permit for individuals whose permits expire in 2024 from Marc Miller’s department in an effort to address Manitoba’s labour shortage. This new policy will extend open work licences to 6,700 competent temporary workers in the province whose work authorizations expire in 2024. As a result, Marc stated that a new public policy will be introduced that will permit qualified temporary workers to hold open work permits within the Manitoba PNP Expression of Interest pool.

“This is really great news for our province,” Minister Malaya Marcelino showed her enthusiasm to the reporters. Marcelino expects the federal government’s extension will allow Manitoba’s nominee program to accept nearly all of its applicants.

How is Manitoba assisting Work permit Holders

With effect from April 26, Manitoba will also be evaluating applications for the MPNP submitted by individuals with post-graduation work permits (PGWPs) and other work permits that are nearing expiration. MPNP candidates whose work authorizations have expired or will expire in the next 45 days must notify the MPNP by completing the Skilled Worker Webform in order to guarantee priority processing.

When will the new policy be implemented

“This situation is creating a challenge for Manitoba’s labour needs,” Miller wrote. He wrote that details of the policy, including “additional eligibility requirements as well as other conditions,” Thus, all of the anticipation surrounding this new program will soon be realised. To support this facilitative step, the letter will include conditions, such as a schedule for performance reporting.

The minister also stated, “I believe this will be an opportune time and context to also revisit the renewal of the Canada-Manitoba Immigration Agreement, as well as to advance discussions on how Manitoba will use its PNP to transition more temporary residents to permanent residency.”

Canada hopes to directly and favourably impact potential nominees by enabling them to work in Manitoba while their PNP applications are being processed through the deployment of this one-time facilitation measure. Other provinces are hopeful and eagerly awaiting some encouraging developments.
