In a move that reflects Canada’s commitment to inclusivity and support for its temporary residents, Immigration Minister Marc Miller has announced the extension of work permits for 6,700 individuals in Manitoba on Tuesday, 7th May, 2024.

In February, the government of Manitoba  requested an extension of the work permit extensions manitoba for individuals whose permits expire in 2024 from Marc Miller’s department in an effort to address Manitoba’s labor shortage. This new policy will extend open work licenses to 6,700 competent temporary workers in the province whose work authorizations expire in 2024. As a result, Marc stated that a new public policy will be introduced that will permit qualified temporary workers to hold open work permits within the Manitoba PNP Expression of Interest pool.

“This is really great news for our province,” Minister Malaya Marcelino said showing her enthusiasm to the reporters. Marcelino anticipates that almost all of the candidates will be able to apply to Manitoba’s nominee program thanks to the federal government’s extension.

How is Manitoba assisting Work permit Holders?

With effect from April 26, Manitoba will also be evaluating applications for the MPNP submitted by individuals with post-graduation work permits (PGWPs) and other work permit extensions manitoba that are nearing expiration. MPNP candidates whose work authorizations have expired or will expire in the next 45 days must notify the MPNP by completing the Skilled Worker Webform in order to guarantee priority processing.

When will the new policy be implemented?

“This situation is creating a challenge for Manitoba’s labor needs,” Miller wrote. He wrote that details of the policy, including “additional eligibility requirements as well as other conditions,” Thus, all of the anticipation surrounding this new program will soon be realized. The letter will include parameters, such as a timeline for performance reporting, to enable this facilitative move.

In addition, the minister said, “I think this will be a good time and place to review the Canada-Manitoba Immigration Agreement renewal and to move forward with talks about how Manitoba will use its PNP to move more temporary residents to permanent residency.”

Canada hopes to directly and favorably impact potential nominees by enabling them to work in Manitoba while their PNP applications are being processed through the deployment of this one-time facilitation measure. Other provinces are hopeful and eagerly awaiting some encouraging developments.
